Affiliate Marketing Definitions

We often get asked questions about what affiliate marketing is and how it helps a business. In that discussion we sometimes bring up particular sayings or phrases that are specific to the affiliate marketing industry. Below is a list of common definitions used within affiliate marketing in order to help clarify important phrases commonly used within the industry:

Cost Per Action (CPA)

Also know as Pay Per Action (PPA), Pay Per Sale (PPS) or Pay Per Purchase (PPP). This is the commission which is paid to an affiliate on the amount the customer purchased. [Read more...]

How to Negotiate Prime Real Estate on Super Affiliate Sites for FREE

What is a Super Affiliate?

Super Affiliates are generally defined as the highest earning affiliates in the industry.  Within most affiliate programs, the Super Affiliates will generate 90% or more of the overall program sales, so building those relationships and negotiating link placement on their sites is imperative to your program’s success.

Most Super Affiliates are diligent with researching and selecting a potential affiliate program, but if you don’t have any in your program, you’ll need to start searching and recruiting right away! Building lasting relationships with Super Affiliates should be a primary objective for every affiliate manager, because without those relationships the program will not reach its full potential and ultimately remain flat. Once a relationship has been established, you can start getting better placement for your program links on those affiliate sites.

Shareasale ThinkTank Remix

Last week, I had the pleasure of going to visit Chicago to attend the Shareasale ThinkTank Remix Conference. It was my first conference for the ecommerce industry and if this is how most conferences are, I can expect a lot of good things at future conferences. The team at Shareasale really did a great job of organizing the event and making sure that all attendees would have a fun time while we networked with our peers.

Here’s a recap of how it all went down: [Read more...]

Vancouver Affiliate Summit Meetup in Review

Vancouver Affiliate Summit Meetup

The first ever Vancouver Affiliate Summit Meetup took place May 17th, 2011 at Subeez Cafe in downtown Vancouver and had a good turnout of 12 people. It was a casual environment and was a great opportunity to network with some of Vancouver’s seasoned affiliate marketing professionals. The overall vibe and feedback was one of excitement with everyone wondering when the next one will be held and wanting to tell more people to come. [Read more...]

Affiliate Marketing, Terrorism & How to protect yourself against “ParasiteWare”.

With the demise of a certain terrorist earlier this week, global terrorism took a hit and the most elusive man in the world was removed from the FBI Most Wanted List. What does terrorism have to do with affiliate marketing, you might ask?  Well, let’s say that if Affiliate Programs are independent countries and affiliates are citizens of those countries, then “parasite marketing” would be the terrorism within the programs!

A simple definition of “parasite marketing” or “ParasiteWare” can be defined as, an application that causes the overwriting of another affiliate’s commission tracking cookie, essentially “stealing” other affiliate’s sales/commission.  The most common example of “parasite marketing” [Read more...]

Affiliate Summit Meetup Community coming to a city near you!

Networking is an integral part of an affiliate’s livelihood and Affiliate Summit Conferences are awesome events where you can meet and learn from industry leaders. These events are only held twice a year in New York and Las Vegas, but that is all about to change with the introduction of the Affiliate Summit Meetup community!

Affiliate Summit was founded by Shawn Collins and Missy ward in 2003 to provide an educational networking environment for all those involved in the Affiliate Marketing Industry such as agencies, affiliates, merchants, networks, and vendors. To help with the lack of networking opportunities between events, Affiliate Summit has introduced a new Meetup Community to allow affiliate marketers to organize networking events within their own local cities. This is a great opportunity for new and experienced affiliate marketers to get together and make connections without having to travel or wait for the next Affiliate Summit event. There are currently 416 affiliate marketers registered to Meetup communities in 57 cities and that includes yours truly (Me :) ) and All Inclusive Marketing) CEO, Sarah Bundy, in the Vancouver, BC Affiliate Summit Meetup community.

To stay up to speed with Affiliate Summit events and Meetups in your area, you can visit the Affiliate Summit Meetup website or search #MeetmeAffSum on Twitter. Thank you Affiliate Summit for coming up with such a wicked idea for the rest of us to connect and learn.

Why & How to Start an Affiliate Program

Having an affiliate program is an essential marketing strategy that many large and small e-commerce businesses are utilizing in the realm of online marketing. Not all e-commerce businesses like the idea of paying affiliates commission (sharing revenue) for sales that they might already make, but the benefits of having an affiliate program are far too great to be ignored.  In this industry, money is the name of the game and we are all here to play.

Interested in becoming an affiliate manager? Start by reading this post.

I have often been asked how to start in the affiliate marketing management world and decided to post my response to someone who recently emailed me. Here was my answer to him:

To be an effective affiliate manager, you need to have a strong balance and understanding of both affiliate needs (emotionally and personally) and the technical side. From an affiliate needs standpoint, the best thing to do is ask questions, listen to concerns, study websites and understand their marketing methods.

From a tech perspective you’ll need to know:

  • how to read basic HTML and affiliate tracking links,
  • know which banner sizes affiliates want,
  • how to identify fraudulent affiliates
  • understand what parasitic (parasite ware) affiliates are, how they work and how to avoid them
  • how cookies work
