We often get asked questions about what affiliate marketing is and how it helps a business. In that discussion we sometimes bring up particular sayings or phrases that are specific to the affiliate marketing industry. Below is a list of common definitions used within affiliate marketing in order to help clarify important phrases commonly used within the industry:

Cost Per Action (CPA)

I have often been asked how to start in the affiliate marketing management world and decided to post my response to someone who recently emailed me. Here was my answer to him:

To be an effective affiliate manager, you need to have a strong balance and understanding of both affiliate needs (emotionally and personally) and the technical side. From an affiliate needs standpoint, the best thing to do is ask questions, listen to concerns, study websites and understand their marketing methods.

From a tech perspective you’ll need to know:

  • how to read basic HTML and affiliate tracking links,
  • know which banner sizes affiliates want,
  • how to identify fraudulent affiliates
  • understand what parasitic (parasite ware) affiliates are, how they work and how to avoid them
  • how cookies work

What you should know before starting an Online Affiliate Business

Online affiliate marketing models can be great for your business. If you are thinking about pursuing an affiliate marketing opportunity with a business or product you are passionate about, keep these 3 tips in mind:

1. Choose a business/product you believe in
It’s always easier to sell what you like and believe in. Carefully evaluate their affiliate marketing program and make sure it’s right for you before signing up. Then, be prepared to give it your all to be profitable.

2. Prepare for financial and time investment
You may be required to invest money to start your affiliate marketing business. You’ll probably also want a website to promote your products, and an initial financial investment may be required to get started. Do your research before starting to make sure it will fit your lifestyles.

3. Stay on your game
To maintain a successful affiliate marketing business you need to constantly stay at the top of your game. Actively promote yourself as well as your products or business and seek the help or training from an affiliate professional or veteran.

One thing is for sure: You’ll need to work on making your affiliate marketing business a success. Keep at and you’ll find the more effort and attention you give it, the more profitable you can be!
